100 - Pass the Dutchie

 - Pass the Dutchie was the first black music video to be shown on MTV
 - The original was 'Pass the Kutchie' which is slang for cannabis. However being young kids singing the song, they changed it to 'Dutchie' which is a cooking pot

'Once in a lifetime' by Talking Heads is considered to be one of the best videos of all time. It is the main singer dancing abstractly and moving in weird ways. It is said he based his movements on mentally disabled people who he had studied before, which did cause some controversy.

Preliminary Task - Final

Preliminary Task

We were given a preliminary task to complete which was to make our own music video of 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart' by Elton John and Kiki Dee. We had to decide who was going to be in the video and Beth and Joe both volenteered. They were given clear instructions to sing out loud to the music as it makes lip syncing much easier and effective.

We got up the lyrics on youtube on the computer for Beth and Joe to look at. They only had to sing about a minutes worth of the song. We had to film three continous takes. One of Beth singing alone, one of Joe, and one of them both together.

Model of the Media

In lesson, we learnt about the model of the media. This is where all three types help each other to be able to work.

Examples of Text:
  • TV
  • Radio
  • Film
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Posters
  • Leaflets
  • Websites
Examples of Institutions:
  • MGM
  • Sony
  • Microsoft
  • Paramount
  • Fox
A text is distributed by the institutions to the audience. For audience the view the text, a financial transaction occurs between them and the institutions.

Possible song choice

'Oh me, Oh my' - The 99's

Finding our music

For our music video we need to find music obviously. However we are not able to use music that is signed by a record company as we could be penalised with copyrighting.

We have been given websites to look at which have various unsigned artists which we can use once we have asked for permission. These websites are :

We also have the option to create our own music or if we know anyone who is in a band, we could use their music if they are unsigned.

Conventions of Music Videos

Music videos need different aspects to be able to be a successful music video. The convections of a music video are :

- Music
- Lip syncing
- Dancing
- Instruments
- Artist
- Name
- Extravagant Costumes
- Mise en Scene ; Setting and Hair and make-up
- Fast editing

When we make our music video we need to effectively promote the band and the track and we need to reach both the core audience and new target audiences

Jamies Tips

Jamie Thraves has tips for young music video directors, these are:

- use the lyrics but not to literal
- Go with the emotion of the song

Case Study - Jamie Thraves

Jamie Thraves is a young director, who produced short films at university. He showed these films to video production companies. One of the companies to reply to Jamie Thraves' work was 'Factory Films'. He began with thee a shot three very low budget music videos - about £5000 each.

Thraves went on to produce very famous music videos;

- Radiohead - Just : £100,000 budget and was shot in three days

-Coldplay - The Scientist

Since then he worked with Japanese Popstars - 'Song for Lisa'. Also he has used these music videos to get into the film business; he has shot for three features:
- The Low Down
- The Cry of the Owl
- Treacle Jr

The Brief

This year, our task is to produce a music 'promo' video which can be up to 5 minutes long. We can work on our own or in a group of up to four. We also need to produce a 'digipak' for its release on CD and a magazine advertisement for the digipak. In addition to the 'promo' video we have to produce a critical evaluation.
