Initial Ideas and why

Above are some of the ideas myself, Beth and Dan have come up with when we first listened to 'Oh me oh my'.

Having a boy band playing a live gig was the first thing we thought of. We definitely want to use this, as lip syncing is important and this would cover that, also it would look effective, with good acting, and drummers and guitarists. We want to make it as realistic as possible.

The famous locations idea I came up with was influenced by my favourite music video, rockstar by Nickleback. The whole video is different people lip syncing the song. Some of the shots are with famous landmarks in the background. For example, Big Ben.

Writing the lyrics on boards and then the performer pulling them up in time to the song is an idea we like. Obviously lip syncing is important, however we feel this is a little bit different and every now and now it may look good.

The paint fight we feel would be effective as we feel the colours from it would look very stylish. Also I had the idea of slow motion being used in this.

66 - Subterranean Homesick blues

No. 66 in the '100 greatest music videos' is Subterranean homesick blues by Bob Dylan.

This music video was successful because this was the first time anyone had ever done anything like this and it was something so simple and easy to do. It was liked because of the way he throws away the cards, which is cool and sometimes Bob Dylan gets his timing wrong and it makes the video.

Analysis of Focus Group

The three questions we asked were
- What were your first impressions of the song?
- What other artist/band does the song remind you of?
- How does the song make you feel?

1) What were your first impressions of the song?
Most suggestions given were positive first impressions, portraying the song as fun and upbeat and that they liked it. However one person didn't like the song and said it was something he would not listen to. We consider the result to be that the song appeals to a lot of audiences, of different age and gender, but we realise we cannot please everyone, as people have different musical preferences. Some of the words used to describe the song are demonstrated below, in which we used Wordle to create it.

2) Bands were mainly what one person called 'fun bands', including such bands as the kooks and oasis. Our group strongly agrees with the comparison of the singer of the band to that of oasis. One individual listed bands that non of the group members had heard of, and we have therefore had to look them up on Youtube to see what sort of mood they provide, and the sorts of videos they have. This included Suade, Prematives and Jellyfish; Jellyfish was the one, if any, that was most comparable to our song. when looking at the bands that people suggested, we noticed that each video had lip synching and a performance from the band, which we want to do with ours.

3) Like the first impressions, the mood of the song was also commented on in a positive way. It was suggested that the song created a happy and relaxed mood. One person says that they believe the song could fit to lots of moods, depending on the listeniners perspective, which is good as we are provided with more choice on what to have in our video. We can maniulate the song quite easily to provide a particular mood.

78 - Cry

No. 78 in the '100 greatest music videos' is 'Cry' by Godley and Creme.

This video was made using random people that were around at the time they made it. They made sure they used people who had distinctive features so they stood out to keep the audience watching. Lyrics were learnt quickly and it is simply done by morphing each face into one and other. It was effective because nothing like this had been done before, and the emotion on the peoples faces kept the audience engaged.

Below is our final version of the focus group myself and my group created. We have used Beth to ask the questions and answering them are:
- Angela Chinnick
- Connor Murray
- Harley Mason
- Charlie Land
- Mr Tasic

Editing the Focus Group

Today we spent the morning uploading our Focus Group footage and putting everything in the correct order to make it effective. I also had a play around with some off the transitions to experiment and get used to how it works fully. Below are screen shots of the process of editing.

Filming the Focus Group

We had to make a Focus Group in order to find out audience opinions of our song 'Oh Me Oh My' by The 99s. We want to get audience feedback to know whether the song will be well liked and who people think our band are like. Below are pictures of us filming when creating our focus group.

The Kooks - 'She Moves in her Own Way'

I have chosen to write about this song because it very much reminds me of the song we are doing our music video on; 'Oh my oh my'. I haven't studied both lyrics, however to tune and the 'feel' of the songs are very similar in my opion. Therefore I have looked at the video 'She moves in her own way' to see if there were any ideas I could pick up on to use in our music video.

Oh Me Oh My - Song Lyrics

Everyday I seem to turn around
Im on my back agian
Coz I know theres something
better than the tomb I am living in

Looking outside and the sky is black
I know a better place, coz if
these four walls keep closing in
im wasting time and space

Oh me
Oh my
You know that I've got something to say

Oh me
Oh my
I think about it everyday

Oh me
Oh my
You know I've been changing my ways
Coz I dream of better days

Dirty old towns ringing in my ears
And don't I know just why
Coz theres nothing changing in this town
Some gray northern sky

Gotta get away, I gotta start again
Gotta turn my life around
Coz if these four walls keep closing in
this ground im digging around

Oh me
Oh my
You know that I've got something to say

Oh me
Oh my
I think about it everyday

Oh me
Oh my
You know I've been changing my ways
Coz I dream of better days with you now

(GUITAR SOLO)

Oh me
Oh my
You know I've got something to say

Oh me
Oh my
I think about it everyday

Oh me
Oh my
You know I've got something to say

Oh me
Oh my
I think about it everyday

Oh me
Oh my
You know I'll be changing my ways
Coz I dream of better days with you now

The 99's

We have all agreed on using the song 'Oh me, Oh my' by The 99's.

The 99's

The 99's are a group from Manchester in England. They are made up of 3 band members; Johnny West who is the lead vocalist and plays guitar, Adam Quibley who is on drums and James Loughlin who is backing vocalist and guitarist. They met and grew up together in school and formed a band due to their love of music. Due to high public demand, they released an album in 2010.

Conflicts in the group

Myself and Dan both looked on www.unsigned.com to look at any other songs we could use for our Music video. I found a song from the Silent Sundays called 'Thin Black Jeans' and Dan found a song by Anonymous Shapes called 'Trip (Jet-Lag)'. We couldn't agree on which one to use so we have all agreed with the other members in our group to stick to our original plan, and to use 'Oh my, Oh my' by The 99s.

Controversial Videos

Many Music Videos are controversial and some are even banned in certain countries due to the publics opinions. However this shouldn't be seen as a particularly bad because a lot of controversial videos are remembered. A good example of a controversial music video is 'Smack my Bitch up' by the Prodigy. This music video was released and there was an immediate up raw about it from the public. The 'National Organisation for Women' were a particular group who were not to pleased with the video. The video was banned in the UK, however after massive demands on MTV, it was allowed to be shown, but only after midnight. The video was named "most controversial" in MTV's history.

Although controversy in music videos can sometimes be a good thing for artists, I do not think it would be a good idea to make our music video controversial!

Nickelback - Rockstar - My favourite music video

'Rockstar' by Nickelback is a music video which I really like. Myself and my group members have discussed the possibility of using this style in our music video and have concluded that if we can get enough people in the video and make it entertaining, then it is something we would consider doing ourselves.

Purpose and success criteria of a Music Video

The reason music artists create a video for their songs are:
  • to get the song more popular
  • to advertise themselves
  • to have an illustration with the song
  • to appeal to the visual audience
  • to express emotions
  • to make an artistic statement
The success of a Music Video can be judged on:
  • downloads
  • the change of peoples opinions
  • how memorable it is
  • discussion in the media
  • sales
  • hits on youtube
  • charts
  • CD sales
  • MTV awards
Justin Beiber gets a lot of youtube hits, an example being this one.
A video may become popular because it is liked for its
