Props and costumes!

We used a number of costumes and props throughout the making of our video.
Costumes.
Costumes only consisted of normal clothing, such as 'indie rock' clothes to match our music. This includes Chinos and skinny jeans which is the stereotype.
Beth in the video, was dressed up to look glamorous.

Props.
Props helped to make the music video more realistic and believable, as well as making it more interesting. The props we used are below;

Band Scene- Guitar, Microphone- school music department; cost FREE (unfortunately we were not able to use a drum kit as the music department only have one and is difficult to transport)

Coloured card (and marker pens) which we wrote the 'Oh Me Oh My' lyrics on- Art department at school- Cost; FREE

Newspaper, that is going to be bought in the shop scene, was bought before, because the shop we filmed in is a party shop- Cost; 55p

The SeeSaw, in Valance Park, is a prop in the scene where Tom thinks he sees his ex girlfriend, but doesn't- Cost; FREE

8. Bittersweet Symphony

No. 8 in the list is 'Bittersweet symphony' by the Verve.

This video involves the lead singer of the Verve, Richard Ashcroft, walking the streets of London. The thing which makes this video great is Ashcroft's performance; the way he looks so cool walking with attitude and barging into random people down the street while he sings the song. The ironic thing is that Ashcroft is from Manchester and is causing havoc in the streets of London.

Filming update - London

Today the filming in London went really well. We got the shots, outside Tower of London, Tower Bridge, The London eye, and of a shot of all the buildings in the background from a bridge. Hopefully it will look effective when we edit it tomorrow.

Last Minute filming!

After editing all the footage, we have unfortunately realised that our video just neeeds something extra. Therefore today we are going up London to film the footage that we originally planned to do. Which is holding up the lyrics in various landmarks, for example the london eye. We may be able to edit today if we are back in time, if not it will be all day tomorrow as the due date closes in!

14 - Dirrty

No. 14 in the '100 greatest music videos' is 'Dirrty' by Christina Aguilera.

This video is another controversial one. It caused up-raw in the media and public due to Christina Aguilera's performance. For one the song is called 'Dirrty' with Christina Aguilera dancing with hardly any clothes on. The video was criticised as it was said it 'made women look like objects of sex' and women are shown the wrong way in this video.

Digipak and Advert update

Whilst we filmed the chorus in front of the brick wall, we also took still pictures, to use for the digipak, one of each person holding the sign up smiling for the front cover, and one of them pulling faces for the inside.

Filming - Band

Today we filmed the band in the drama studio. Using the drama studio was useful as we used the lighting to make the singers and band effective. In the band, Charlie was the main singer, and me and Rory were the guitarists.

We done multiple shots, including a shot of all of us from straight ahead, one of just the singer from an angle, a close up of the singers face, and a shot of just the guitarists, with close ups of them fretting.

We also helped out the other group as they did a band as well.

London Call Sheet

Like it is important to have a risk assessment sheet every time filming is carried out, we also feel it necessary to create a call sheet for each member of the group. To demonstrate this we drew one up for filming in London as an example.

As this shows, the Call Sheet provides such information as the crew, meeting details, and props and costumes.

35 - Nothing Compares 2 U

No. 35 in the list of '100 greatest music videos' is 'Nothing Compares 2U' by Sinead O'connor.

This music video is very significant because of the emotion of the song. However many people argue that it is the visuals rather the sound which shows the true emotion. Sinead O'Connor will always be remembered for this video as the performance she gives is truly memorable. O'Connor's facial expressions tell the story of her grievance of her mothers death and she even begins to cry towards the end. This apparently was not in the script.

Band Risk Assessment

In the music industry every time filming is carried out is it necessary to have a risk assessment sheet on which  team leaders, health and safety issues, solutions and contact details are provided to all involved in case of an emergency. Although we are not a proffesional team, we felt we should create an example of this when we filmed the band scene.

Filming - Park

Today myself, Dan and Beth went to Valance Park where we filmed more footage for our video. In our video, I will  think I am 'see-sawing' with my ex girlfriend, only to find that im doing it on my own. Again we have gone for the comical side, although there maybe a hint of sympathy!

The van behind us did cause some problems with the angles of our shots, however we managed to overcome this.

48 - Hurt

No. 48 in the '100 greatest music videos' is 'Hurt' by Johnny Cash.

This video was filmed 6 months before Johnny Cash pass away. It was released in 2003. The video shows video clips of Johnny Cash's life, and is basically a timeline of his life. In a way it is a way to show the life and the great career of Cash. During the time of filming, Cash was really ill and wasn't well enough to leave his house, therefore the video had to be made at his house. At the end of the video, the final shot is of Cash closing his piano lid. This signifies the end.

Editing the 'Oh Me Oh My' scene

We begun to edit the 'Oh me Oh my' scene, however we realised a few mistakes were made. For example, the we hadn't filmed for long enough before and after the paper was lifted. Therefore, we re-filmed and have edited that and it is much better and we will definitely use it.

In the image above, we have edited it so it looks like myself and Charlie swap papers as we both hold up the incorrect one. It looks very good and is quite comical.

Digipak Idea!

Myself, Dan and Beth sat down today and spoke and wrote about the Digipak. We have come up with some ideas.

This is an example of some of the ideas we have come up with. Above is a drawn image of the idea we have for the front cover of the digipak, it is four people holding up signs with the lyrics to 'Oh Me Oh My'. We think this may look effective and will probably use it.

Filming - Party Go Go

Yesterday, myself, Beth and Dan went to Party Go Go to do some filming. We were able to get permission to film there as Beth works there. Party Go Go is a shop which sells party equipment and fancy dress stuff. We needed to use any shop for our filming and we used this and it went very well. We now have to edit it to make it look effective.

Possible locations

Before we begin our video, we all need to discuss as a group where we want our video to be set. Obviously this will depend on what our video will be about. We also need to take into consideration the weather, costs and accessibility. Above are a few locations we have already mentioned to each other. These include:
  • London
  • The beach
  • Party Go Go
  • School drama room
  • School assembly room
  • Beth's dad's house

Survey Results Analysis

We have only received 15 results for our survey however to know and get ideas of how we want our music video to be we need to collect the results and analyse them. We collected to results and below they are shown if different ways.

What gender are you?

How old are you?

What is your favourite music video and why?

All the answers we got were very helpful apart from the one 'I like turtles'. A lot of the videos match the ones in which we studied in '100 greatest music videos'. Also there is a wide variety of different songs and genres.

How often do you watch music videos in a week?

Due to new technologies such as Ipods, it is now very unlikely for people to actually watch the music videos. This is shown in the results we collected as the majority of answers were placed in the '0-5' band.

Would you go out your way to watch a music video?

This is a good response as it shows that music videos are important to a songs popularity.

On a scale of 1-10 , what would u rate the important of a music video?

These responses are mainly on the higher end of the scale which shows us that the video is very important to the song.

What is your favorite music genre?

The main response we got on our survey was 'Dance' music which isn't particularly what we wanted as we are not doing a dance song. We are doing a 'Indie' type song which classifies as 'Rock' which only got 2 responses.

What is your favorite music video style?

The main response we got was comical videos, therefore we will try to make our video funny as it is what people like. Also story-like was a popular option as well as emotional however it may be difficult to make it emotional and comical

What makes a good music video?

Filming - 'Oh Me Oh My'

We did some filming today in lesson. For one of the choruses, we have 4 boys, including muself, all holding up a board with the lyrics on; Oh Me Oh My. We have also decided to go for something comical where two of us hold up the wrong boards and have to switch it around, which will look good if we edit it correctly.

Editing - Fireworks

We have edited the Fireworks footage we filmed to other week. Most of it looks really good and it can be effective in the video. However it is very abstract and we may struggle to fit it in to the music video as its nothing to do with story line.

Storyboard

We have created this storyboard to show our ideas, however on this one we have annotated to it to show our ideas in more detail.

Animatic

We have done an animatic to show all our music video ideas in a short clip.

Filming update - Fireworks

ierOn saturday night me and Beth attended a firework party. We decided to film the fireworks as because our video is abstract and random with different ideas, and it may work well if we apply it correctly to our music video. Daniel come up with a good idea, where the fireworks explode to say 'Oh me Oh my'. This may be difficult to do however if we can find the tools to edit it, it would look really good.

More ideas!

We have come up with another idea for the music video, which is a storyline. Due to the song lyrics, we have agreed we maybe need to include a love story. Our idea is sort of like this which see's a boy and a girl split up, and the boy having pretty bad memories of it, and maybe cannot forget her.

Suggested filming schedule

This is the filming schedule in which we have planned to carry out. We will take into consideration that various events/obstacles will occur so we may have to change the schedule if needed.

Survey Monkey Update

Unfortunately we only have 5 responses for our survey which is nowhere near the amount needed to analyse the results and come to conclusions. Therefore we will continue to post the survey on facebook and  I will also try Twitter and get friends and family to complete the survey to boost up the number of responses.

Montage of Music Video Settings

Mood Board

I have created a Mood Board to show, in picture form, the different ideas I get from listening to 'Oh me Oh my' by the 99's.

What is a Digipak?

As part of our coursework, we must also create our own digipak. A digipak is a case in which the CD will go in. On a digipak, we muct include;
  • Six panels
  • A spine with the artist and album name
  • Barcode/ Price
  • Tracklist
  • Disk impression

Survey Monkey - Facebook

Me, Dan and Beth have all posted links to our survey on Facebook. We have done this so people will complete our survey and we will know our target audience for our music video.

Survey Monkey - Audience research

As a group, we have set up an account on survey monkey and we are going to make a survey for people to complete. We are doing this for audience research to find out what type of music video to make to attract the correct audience.

We are going to ask 10 questions:
1. What gender are you?
2. How old are you?
3. What is your favourite music video?
4. Why is this?
5. How often do you watch music channels?
6. Would you go out of your way to watch a music video on YouTube?
7. How important is a music video in promoting a song or artist?
8. What is your favourite music genre?
9. What is your favourite music video genre?
10. In your own opinion what makes a good music video?

Change in our group

Unfortunately Joe Barwick has decided to quit sixth form and therefore is not in our media class anymore. This means our group has been cut down to three with just Me, Beth and Dan. We wish Joe all the best in future and support his decision as he wasn't happy.

Initial Ideas and why

Above are some of the ideas myself, Beth and Dan have come up with when we first listened to 'Oh me oh my'.

Having a boy band playing a live gig was the first thing we thought of. We definitely want to use this, as lip syncing is important and this would cover that, also it would look effective, with good acting, and drummers and guitarists. We want to make it as realistic as possible.

The famous locations idea I came up with was influenced by my favourite music video, rockstar by Nickleback. The whole video is different people lip syncing the song. Some of the shots are with famous landmarks in the background. For example, Big Ben.

Writing the lyrics on boards and then the performer pulling them up in time to the song is an idea we like. Obviously lip syncing is important, however we feel this is a little bit different and every now and now it may look good.

The paint fight we feel would be effective as we feel the colours from it would look very stylish. Also I had the idea of slow motion being used in this.

66 - Subterranean Homesick blues

No. 66 in the '100 greatest music videos' is Subterranean homesick blues by Bob Dylan.

This music video was successful because this was the first time anyone had ever done anything like this and it was something so simple and easy to do. It was liked because of the way he throws away the cards, which is cool and sometimes Bob Dylan gets his timing wrong and it makes the video.

Analysis of Focus Group

The three questions we asked were
- What were your first impressions of the song?
- What other artist/band does the song remind you of?
- How does the song make you feel?

1) What were your first impressions of the song?
Most suggestions given were positive first impressions, portraying the song as fun and upbeat and that they liked it. However one person didn't like the song and said it was something he would not listen to. We consider the result to be that the song appeals to a lot of audiences, of different age and gender, but we realise we cannot please everyone, as people have different musical preferences. Some of the words used to describe the song are demonstrated below, in which we used Wordle to create it.

2) Bands were mainly what one person called 'fun bands', including such bands as the kooks and oasis. Our group strongly agrees with the comparison of the singer of the band to that of oasis. One individual listed bands that non of the group members had heard of, and we have therefore had to look them up on Youtube to see what sort of mood they provide, and the sorts of videos they have. This included Suade, Prematives and Jellyfish; Jellyfish was the one, if any, that was most comparable to our song. when looking at the bands that people suggested, we noticed that each video had lip synching and a performance from the band, which we want to do with ours.

3) Like the first impressions, the mood of the song was also commented on in a positive way. It was suggested that the song created a happy and relaxed mood. One person says that they believe the song could fit to lots of moods, depending on the listeniners perspective, which is good as we are provided with more choice on what to have in our video. We can maniulate the song quite easily to provide a particular mood.

78 - Cry

No. 78 in the '100 greatest music videos' is 'Cry' by Godley and Creme.

This video was made using random people that were around at the time they made it. They made sure they used people who had distinctive features so they stood out to keep the audience watching. Lyrics were learnt quickly and it is simply done by morphing each face into one and other. It was effective because nothing like this had been done before, and the emotion on the peoples faces kept the audience engaged.

Focus Group!

Below is our final version of the focus group myself and my group created. We have used Beth to ask the questions and answering them are:
- Angela Chinnick
- Connor Murray
- Harley Mason
- Charlie Land
- Mr Tasic

Editing the Focus Group

Today we spent the morning uploading our Focus Group footage and putting everything in the correct order to make it effective. I also had a play around with some off the transitions to experiment and get used to how it works fully. Below are screen shots of the process of editing.

Filming the Focus Group

We had to make a Focus Group in order to find out audience opinions of our song 'Oh Me Oh My' by The 99s. We want to get audience feedback to know whether the song will be well liked and who people think our band are like. Below are pictures of us filming when creating our focus group.
