Actual filming schedule

We have made a document containing the dates of when we filmed our footage and the location. As shown below, we did have some problems, for example one day we had planned to go London however it was heavily raining and therefore we had to change the date.

Analysis of a CD cover

As part of our coursework, we have to create our own digipak to go with our music video. As of this I am going to look at a CD cover to maybe pick up some ideas. I have decided to analyse David Guetta's album - One More Love.

Digipak and Advert - Past students work

We are now beginning to learn about digipaks in lesson because as part of our coursework we have to create our own for our band/song. I am going to look at this example below of previous students work. I am also going to study professional work later in my blog to use as part of research and planning.

This is the CD cover which was created.

This is the music video these 4 girls created. This is a very good video for a variety of reasons. Firstly, the video is very relevant to the music as its a girl pop band singing and in this video the four girls are very glamorous which fits. Also the performance of the girls must be noted as none of them are camera shy at all and its effectiveness is shown as we have seen some videos where the actors look disinterested and its has a very poor effect. Also the editing is very fast paced which fits the music and it keeps the viewer interested due to all the different going ons.

As you can see in the examples above, the theme for the digipak and magazine advert stays the same, which I believe is important. In fact the same image is used for the advert and the front cover of the digipak. In the digipak the inside cover is a very good idea as its one image spread across three sides, which is very effective. Also the images used are relaxing and overall both are very well made.

The Effects Model

I will now explain in further detail, the concept behind the Effects Model.

  • The consumption of media texts has an effect or influence upon the audience
  • It is normally considered that this effect is negative
  • Audiences are passive and powerless to prevent the influence
  • The power lies with the message of the text.
This model is also called 'The Hyperdermic Model'
  •  Here, the messages in the media texts are injected into the audience by the powerful, syringe-like, media
  • The audience is powerless to resist
  • Therefore, the media works like a drug and the audience is drugged, addicted.

The Compare the Market/meerkat advert is a prime example of the Effects Model. This is because the advert is very memorable and some would annoying. This is effective as although people say its annoying, if it come to a time when they needed to compare prices, they would remember this advert and use it, which increases the sales for compare the market.

Editing! - London

We have edited the London scene and overall we are very happy with the results. However, with the London Eye shot, it is very dark and the lyrics on the board cannot be seen. We have tried to adjust the colour and contrast however when we make it brighter, the image doesn't look as good and the resolution becomes worse. Therefore we decided not to use any of the london eye shot, however we are pleased with all the other shots. We also have a nice shot, which does involve the London eye, of a boat going across the Thames. Sped up, this looks very effective.

www.the99smusic.com

For our research, we decided to look into, with more detail, our band; The 99s. This would help us gain an insight into the type of people they are and the music they create. We can take this into account for when we are creating our video, digipak and magazine advert. The website features a number of pages, such as:
  • About the band
  • Pictures
  • Videos
  • Contacts

Audience Theory

This section relates to the model of the media, which is that institutions create texts which is then consumed by the audience which make a financial transaction with the institutions. Audiences choose to consume certain texts of their choice due to entertainment value, a personal interest, or to learn. These texts are consumed by watching, reading, listening or interacting. For example, television, newspapers, radio, and gaming. When audiences consume texts, it can form or change opinions or influence an individual, to the point of indoctrination.

There are three theories of audience that can be applied to help understand the relationship between texts and audience.
1. The Effects Model or the Hyperdermic Model
2. The uses and Gratifications Model
3. Reception Theory

I am going to write about each of these theories in an individual post later on the blog.

FIlming - London

Here are some pictures of our day in London for filming !

We filmed me holding up signs with the lyrics on, however the difference in these shots was that we used London and its famous landmarks, I did the sequence in front of the London eye, tower of London, Tower Bridge and one with a view of the Thames. For each shot I had to change my shirt and it was freezing !

1. Thriller

In Channel 4's '100 greatest music videos' Thriller by Michael Jackson took the number 1 spot!

This video is very significant. Firstly, it is hugely remembered for the performance of Michael Jackson. After all the videos I have studied recently, I now realise a whole lot more how important the performance of the actor is. It is also the effects that have been added in this video, for example when Michael Jackson turns into a zombie. Also the dance is important, it is even a well known party dance move now, which shows how significant it was to the making of this video.
